When choosing a rug for a Welsh pony or cob – whether they’re Section A, B, C, or D – remember that many Welsh breeds tend to run a little warm and often have broad shoulders and a cresty neck. Look for rugs with generous shoulder room, smooth linings to reduce rubbing, and adjustable chest straps so you can fine-tune the fit to their compact, powerful build. Always measure from the centre of the chest to the point of the buttock, and check that the rug sits neatly in front of the wither without pulling tight across the chest or slipping back. In milder weather, a lightweight or no-fill turnout is usually plenty for most Welshies, while colder, wet conditions may call for a medium-weight rug – but always base your choice on your individual pony’s clip, condition, and how they feel under the rug, not just the temperature on the forecast.
