01 — COAT OIL

Coat Oil

Welsh coats are thick, native, and often muddy — a good coat oil repels water and dirt so grooming stays quick even through a wet winter. Work a light layer through a clean, dry coat with your palms, following the direction of the hair for an even, weatherproof shine. Look for a non-greasy formula rich in natural oils that conditions the skin without clogging the dense hair typical of Welsh types.

02 — MANE OIL

Mane & Tail Oil

Welsh types are known for full, heavy manes and tails that tangle fast, and the right oil makes detangling far kinder on both hair and hands. Applied sparingly to damp or dry hair, a quality mane oil loosens knots, adds real shine, and helps prevent breakage as you comb through. Choose a lightweight, silicone-free formula that conditions without leaving that greasy, dust-attracting residue.

03 — BRUSHES

Brushes

A Welsh horse earns its keep with a proper kit: a body brush for the coat’s shine, a dandy brush for caked winter mud, a mane comb for those heavy manes and tails, and a soft face brush for sensitive areas. Don’t skip a dedicated feather brush — the characteristic leg feathering on Welsh Cobs needs gentle, regular attention to stay clean and free of mud fever. Build the set once with quality tools and it will last for years of daily grooming.

04 — FLY SPRAYS

Fly Sprays

Summer turnout means flies, and a hardy Welsh horse still deserves relief from midges and biting insects out on the hill. Natural formulas built on citronella and essential oils suit sensitive native skin, while stronger chemical repellents last longer for heavy infestations — always patch-test first on breeds prone to reactions. Apply to a dry coat before turnout, avoiding the eyes, and top up midday when the flies are worst.
