Brushes

Build a hard-working, Welsh-specific brush set once and it will last you for years. Pair a stout dandy brush for caked-on field mud with a dense body brush that pulls natural oils to the surface for a deep gloss. Add a soft, compact face brush for around the eyes and muzzle, and a dedicated feather brush to lift dirt and stains from Welsh Cob leg feathering without stripping the hair.

Clippers

Welsh natives can be clever and a little hand-shy, so quiet, low-vibration clippers are worth the investment. Choose fine blades for tidy lines on a hunter clip, or coarser blades for a forgiving trace clip that leaves winter warmth. Work slowly through dense Welsh coats in long, overlapping strokes to avoid track marks, and always clip on a clean, dry coat with sharp blades.

Coat Oil

A good coat oil does more than add shine. The right formula for dense native coats helps repel water and stable dust, so mud brushes off instead of bonding to the hair. Apply sparingly to a clean, dry coat, following the direction of the hair with a soft cloth or body brush. Look for non-greasy, natural blends that condition without leaving Welsh ponies feeling slick or over-oiled.

Mane & Tail Oil

Heavy Welsh manes and tails are beautiful, but they knot fast. The right mane and tail oil slips through tangles without you having to muscle a brush through. Look for a silicone-free, lightweight formula that adds shine, reduces breakage, and keeps hair from drying out. Work through in sections with your fingers first, then follow with a wide-tooth comb for a smooth, full finish.

Shampoo & Detangler

Welsh coats, feathers, and sensitive pink skin need a shampoo routine that cleans without stripping. Choose pH-balanced, gentle shampoos for regular washes, then add whitening or deep-clean formulas before a show. Follow with a detangler worked into feathers, manes, and tails so mud and bedding don’t stick. Build a simple everyday wash routine, then layer in extra steps only when you’re prepping for the ring.
